15 years for treason: passed the coordinates of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the enemy and tried to get access to secret information in Sumy OVA

A 38-year-old resident of Sumy region has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property for treason (part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). This decision was made following the public prosecution by the prosecutors of the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors proved in court that from the first days of the full-scale invasion, the man was passing coordinates of the location of Ukrainian military forces in the Sumy region to a representative of the FSB of the Russian Federation. He sent the obtained data through secure communication channels.

The convicted man also attempted to officially secure a job at the Sumy Regional State Administration to gain access to classified information about the region's defense system. He was detained by law enforcement while filling out documents in January 2023.

During searches at his residence, a Russian passport in his name and a phone with evidence of espionage activities were found. It was established that he received cryptocurrency for cooperating with the FSB.

He awaited the court's verdict in custody.

The cynicism of the accused is striking. He witnessed the horrific consequences of Russian aggression firsthand, yet he chose to collaborate with the enemy. He planned to go to work daily at the administration that ensures the region's vital activities, while intending to pass the information obtained there to the occupiers. I am convinced that everyone who betrays the state will end up behind bars for a long time,” noted the prosecutor in the case, Volodymyr Perederiy.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine in the Sumy region.
