5 years in prison for negligent storage of a weapon: a child died due to a shot

In Kyiv region, the court issued a guilty verdict against a man whose negligent handling of a shotgun led to the death of a six-year-old girl.

For several years, the man had kept a smoothbore hunting shotgun and two loaded cartridges behind a wardrobe in the house where he lived with his family.

The incident occurred on August 23, 2025, in the village of Stare, Boryspil district.

The seven-year-old son of the convicted man was spending time with a six-year-old neighbor. The boy knew where the weapon was and decided to take it for play. He aimed the shotgun at the girl and fired.

The girl died on the spot from the injuries sustained.

During the court hearing, the man fully admitted his guilt and confirmed the circumstances of the event.

The court found him guilty of committing criminal offenses under Articles 166 and 264 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — malicious failure to fulfill child care obligations and negligent storage of firearms or ammunition, and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment.

In addition, the court granted the civil claim of the victims' representative and ordered the man to pay 10 million UAH in moral damages.
