The Commercial Court of the Chernivtsi region granted the claims of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office and the State Environmental Inspection: the state enterprise "Forests of Ukraine" is obliged to pay the state over 4 million hryvnias in damages caused by illegal logging in the territory of the Vyzhnytsia district.
During a scheduled inspection, the State Environmental Inspection of the Carpathian region established that logging teams from the branch of the enterprise – the State Enterprise "Beregomet Forestry" – had cut down over 2.7 hectares of forest in the territory of the Dolishnoshepitske forestry.
The work was carried out under the guise of "forest restoration," but in fact led to the complete destruction of the forest stand.
Particularly dangerous is the fact that the logging was carried out on protective coastal areas with slopes of 30–35 degrees, in zones where such actions are strictly prohibited by law. Such violations pose a serious threat to the environment, as they lead to soil erosion, landslides, loss of the water-retaining function of forests, and deterioration of the ecological balance in mountainous areas.
The consideration of the case was temporarily halted at the request of the State Enterprise "Forests of Ukraine," which initiated an engineering-ecological forestry examination, hoping that its results would be in favor of the enterprise.
After receiving the results, the prosecutor initiated for the court to hear the experts directly in the session, which allowed for an objective assessment of the environmental damage and a decision in favor of the state.
Thanks to the joint actions of the prosecutors and the environmental inspection, the fact of environmental damage was proven in court: the enterprise must compensate the state for the damages.
