The ecological prosecutor's office requires the limits of the Zhukov Island Reserve in the capital

At the request of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office of the Prosecutor General's Office, the Kyiv District Administrative Court has opened proceedings against the Kyiv City Council and its executive bodies. The prosecution demands that they be obliged to establish the boundaries of the landscape reserve "Zhukiv Island," mark the territory with state informational and protective signs, and enter the relevant data into the State Land Cadastre.

The landscape reserve "Zhukiv Island," covering an area of over 1,600 hectares, was created back in 1999 to preserve unique representatives of flora and fauna listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. It is one of the largest protected areas in the capital, important for biodiversity conservation, the formation of the Dnipro ecological corridor, and the recreational development of Kyiv.

The reserve includes one of the largest islands in the capital and is an important place for recreation and environmental education. Its territory features a picturesque landscape and includes meadows, swamps, and preserved post-glacial dunes (barchans). The numerous channels and riverbeds of the island, lakes, and floodplain areas are valuable spawning grounds and are of great importance for the reproduction of fish in the Kaniv Reservoir.

Despite numerous statements from the city authorities about the need to establish the boundaries of the reserve, the relevant measures have not been implemented for 25 years. Moreover, in the draft of the new general plan for the capital, its territory is not marked as protected at all, which creates risks of illegal disposal of these lands. Due to the lack of established boundaries, part of the reserve's land has been illegally transferred into private ownership for development. Thanks to the prosecutors' lawsuits, most of these lands have been returned to communal ownership.

The protection of reserved territories is one of the priority areas of activity for the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office of the Prosecutor General's Office, which aligns with the state policy and international obligations of Ukraine regarding the increase of protected areas.
