29.08.2025
The Prosecutor General expressed gratitude to the United Nations and personally to the United Nations System Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, for the comprehensive support to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
“We highly appreciate your assistance and all the activities you coordinate in our country. Humanitarian support, restoration, and strengthening of the Rule of Law — all this today is crucial for ensuring justice and bringing sustainable peace closer both in our country and throughout Europe,” emphasized Ruslan Kravchenko.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the results of the interaction and current issues of a strategically important partnership.
The Prosecutor General pointed out that the first and the most important thing is proper documentation of violations of International Humanitarian Law and war crimes. Ukrainian prosecutors accumulate materials about attacks on civilians, sexual violence, torture, executions of civilians, and hand them over to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. At the same time, the reports of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine are a significant element of advocacy at the international level.
Ruslan Kravchenko also thanked for fruitful and effective cooperation with UNICEF.
As a result of this, 15 specialized centers “Barnahus” have already been established in Ukraine to work with children who have suffered from violence or war crimes. “This is a significant step towards the formation of child-friendly justice and their protection, which is one of the priorities of the Prosecutor's Office,” added the Prosecutor General.
The partnership with UNESCO, UNODC, and the International Organization for Migration is essential in the sphere of cultural heritage protection, counteracting illicit trafficking of cultural property, organized crime, and human trafficking.
Provided by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict of Pramila Patten, expert and material and technical support, as well as interaction with UN Women, contributes to the effective investigation of crimes of conflict-related sexual violence.
“I am sure that thanks to the UN System support, the Prosecutor's Office, along with all state law enforcement agencies, will be able to ensure an even more powerful result,” summarized the Prosecutor General.
The participants of the meeting agreed on the priorities for further activities and the possibilities of joint advocacy measures for the protection of those affected by the hostilities and the restoration of justice.
The delegation also included the Head of the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ukraine Sitara Syed, the Head of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Daniel Bell, the Head of the Program Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Ukraine Harsheth Virk, Chief of the Child Protection Section for UNICEF in Ukraine Jean Choi, and Peace and Development Officer of the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Ukraine Alina Serhieieva.
