Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko in Lithuania: Inevitability of punishment is a key priority of Ukraine

The Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko is on a working visit to the Republic of Lithuania from October 30 to 31, during which Ukraine handed over a Russian citizen suspected of war crimes to Lithuania.

During a joint briefing, Ruslan Kravchenko and the Attorney General of Lithuania Nida Grunskene once again emphasized the historic moment for international justice.

Ruslan Kravchenko spoke about the overall situation regarding the investigations of war crimes committed by Russian military personnel on the territory of Ukraine.

In particular, he reported that Ukraine has already registered and is investigating, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, including those from foreign states, 190,000 criminal proceedings.

The Attorney General noted that a joint investigation team (JIT) was created to cover such a large volume of cases, which initially included Lithuania and Poland, and later other European countries.

“I want to assure you that no war crime committed on the territory of Ukraine, against Ukrainian citizens or citizens of other European countries, will be forgotten. Our common goal is to investigate, gather evidence, and hold all those responsible accountable,” emphasized Ruslan Kravchenko.

Separately, the Attorney General highlighted the importance of Lithuania's decision to hold the suspected Russian serviceman criminally accountable under its domestic legislation.

“The fact that Lithuania was the first to decide to hold the suspect in war crimes accountable under its domestic legislation is, without exaggeration, a historic event. It will be included in the history books of the entire world,” he emphasized.

In conclusion, Ruslan Kravchenko stressed the goal of their joint work: “We all need to achieve justice and punish all those guilty of war crimes. Now, in a year, in two years. So that our future generations never see this war and that no aggressor ever thinks of attacking anyone. We need to achieve justice, identify all those responsible, and hold them accountable.”

It should be noted that only the combination of national and international mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court, the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression, and the universal jurisdiction of other states, will ensure full and comprehensive accountability for the aggressor.
