Tortured and killed a civilian during the occupation of the Kherson region - a member of the illegal armed formation "DNR" will be tried

Prosecutors of the Kherson Regional Prosecutor's Office have sent an indictment to the court regarding a participant in the illegal armed formation "DNR" – a native of the city of Makiivka. He is charged with treason, participation in an illegal armed formation in an attack on civilians that resulted in a person's death, as well as cruel treatment of the civilian population in conditions of armed conflict (Part 2 of Article 111, Part 5 of Article 260, Part 2 of Article 28, Parts 1 and 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

According to the investigation, in 2022, the accused acted as part of a unit of the armed formations of the Russian Federation in the territory of the Beryslav district of the Kherson region. He served at checkpoints, checked the documents of local residents, detained and held civilians in inhumane conditions, using beatings and threats to force them to cooperate.

In early April 2022, at one of the checkpoints in the village of Vysokopillya, the accused, along with accomplices, detained a couple and another man. The latter was immediately taken away in an unknown direction, while the couple was held in the yard.

During the so-called "interrogation," the accused brutally beat the man, demanding that he confess to assisting the Ukrainian military, while simultaneously threatening his wife. After the torture, the man was placed in the trunk of a car, taken outside the settlement, and shot. His wife was continued to be held, subjected to psychological pressure, and was only released in the morning.

The accused is currently in hiding — he has been declared wanted. The court proceedings will be conducted in his absence (in absentia).

The special pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Kherson region with operational support from the Main Department of Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Kherson region and the police's criminal investigation department.

Note: according to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a guilty verdict of the court.
