A Ukrainian who fought on the side of Russia was detained at the border with the EU
13.11.2025
Under the procedural guidance of prosecutors from the Office of the Attorney General, investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine, with operational support from the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department, detained a citizen of Ukraine at the border crossing with the European Union, who, after the occupation of Crimea, obtained a Russian passport, signed a contract with the aggressor country, and fought against Ukraine.
The investigation established that while on the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea, the man received a Russian citizen passport from an illegal body of the occupying authority. This allowed him to arrange documents for service in the Russian Armed Forces.
At the end of March 2024, during the full-scale war, he knowingly signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense for a three-year term in the mobilization reserve. Subsequently, he was appointed as a scout in a unit of the Russian military, and after taking an oath of allegiance to the aggressor state, he was transferred to operate unmanned aerial vehicles.
During his service, he participated in combat operations on the side of the occupiers, particularly in the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region.
For these actions, he was notified in absentia of suspicion of treason (Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), placed on the international wanted list, and a court decision was made to choose a preventive measure – detention without bail.
During an attempt to cross the state border at the "Shehyni – Medyka" checkpoint, he was detained. The suspicion was personally handed to him, and he was taken to the pre-trial investigation authority.
The prosecution has already applied to the court for a preventive measure – detention.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a court verdict.
