After the review of the case in the appellate instance, the decision of the Economic Court of the Cherkasy Region, which satisfied the claim of the Smiila District Prosecutor's Office for the return of the national architectural monument — St. Michael's Church in the city of Horodyshche — has come into legal force.
Prosecutors proved in court that in May 2018, the right of private ownership of St. Michael's Church was registered to one of the religious organizations in violation of the law, as the building is state property and belongs to the monuments of cultural heritage of national significance.
St. Michael's Church is a true architectural gem of Cherkasy region. It was built in 1844 in the neo-Gothic style according to the design of the Italian architect Giorgio Torricelli.
Due to its shape, it resembles a cathedral — with high spires, pointed windows, and an architecture unusual for Orthodox churches.
On the ceiling of the temple, there is a unique wall painting from the 19th century — "The Last Judgment," which covers an area of over 100 square meters. This is one of the most interesting and valuable examples of sacred painting in Cherkasy region from that time.
St. Michael's Church is an important part of Ukraine's historical and cultural heritage.
Currently, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine is taking measures to determine the institution that will be the balance holder of St. Michael's Church. This is necessary to ensure proper care, protection, and preservation of the architectural monument.
