Rivne racketeram threatens up to 12 years of prison for extorting fictional debt

Prosecutors of the Rivne Regional Prosecutor's Office have sent an indictment to the court regarding three residents of the regional center who, over several months, from November 2024 to January 2025, demanded the return of a non-existent debt from the victim.

During the pre-trial investigation, it was established that one of the offenders had lent money to his acquaintance. The man repaid the debt, but the borrower began to demand an additional 3,000 US dollars from him as interest. To "extract" this money from the debtor, the offender involved two more acquaintances. They threatened the man, beat him, and took his "Renault Mégane" car, in which they removed the victim's personal belongings, tools, and equipment from the garage. The car was later returned, while the rest was planned to be sold to cover the debt.

Law enforcement officers detained the racketeers and, under the procedural guidance of the Rivne Regional Prosecutor's Office, informed them of the suspicion.

Their actions were classified as extortion and robbery, as well as illegal seizure of a vehicle, committed by a group of individuals in collusion, under martial law, and combined with violence or the threat of its use (Part 4 of Article 189, Part 4 of Article 186, Part 2 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The court chose preventive measures for all three offenders in the form of detention without the right to bail.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by investigators of the Main Investigation Department of the National Police in the Rivne region with operational support from the Security Service of Ukraine in the region.
