The Russian commander was sentenced to 12 years in prison for rape

During the occupation of Makariv in Kyiv region, a Russian soldier broke into the home of a local woman, threatened her with execution, and raped her. Following a public indictment by the Office of the Prosecutor General, he was found guilty of a war crime and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

In the first days of the full-scale invasion, units of the Russian Armed Forces entered the Kyiv region. Among them was the commander of a combat vehicle from the 9th motorized rifle company, which operated as part of the unit that occupied the village of Makariv.

On March 7, 2022, the invaders were combing the area, breaking into the homes of local residents, looting, threatening, and killing people. The commander, along with a subordinate, broke into a woman's home, holding her at gunpoint. Threatening her with execution, he forced her to move to a neighboring house, where, using physical force, he raped her.

We remind you: women during armed conflicts belong to a particularly vulnerable category of civilians and are entitled to additional protection under international humanitarian law. Rape and any forms of sexual violence are serious violations of the Geneva Conventions and are classified as war crimes.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the Main Investigative Department of the State Bureau of Investigation.
