22.10.2025
Under the procedural guidance of the Rivne District Prosecutor's Office, a nurse has been notified of suspicion for improper performance of professional duties due to negligent attitude towards them, which resulted in the death of a child (Part 2 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The investigation established that in December 2022, a 2-month-old girl was undergoing surgery in one of the children's hospitals in Rivne region. During the surgical intervention, the nurse brought an unaccounted and protocol-unforeseen electric heating pad into the operating room. As the suspect did not monitor its temperature, the infant suffered a thermal burn covering 45% of her body surface. The face, abdomen, chest, and legs were the most affected. The girl died from the injuries sustained.
During the investigation, which lasted from December 2022 to October 2025, dozens of investigative and procedural actions were carried out. In particular, a clinical-expert assessment of the quality of medical assistance provided, forensic medical examinations, and other necessary expertise were conducted.
After receiving the experts' conclusions and gathering evidence, in October of this year, the nurse was notified of suspicion and a preventive measure was chosen for her.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Rivne District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Rivne region.
Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a guilty verdict of the court.
