The murder of civilian and abuse from the civilian population in Bucha - reported suspicion to two military personnel of the Russian Federation

Under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General, two more servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces have been identified and charged with war crimes committed during the temporary occupation of the city of Bucha in the Kyiv region.

According to the investigation, the military personnel of the 234th Air Assault Regiment of the 76th Air Assault Division of the Russian Armed Forces violated the laws and customs of war, which manifested in the intentional murder of a civilian and cruel treatment of a peaceful resident.

In March 2022, one of the suspects, a reconnaissance sniper, discovered a 45-year-old local resident in an apartment and, having no legal grounds, shot him in the head with a "Vintorez" sniper rifle, intentionally taking his life. This is already the fourth war crime for which this individual is being held criminally responsible in Ukraine.

Another serviceman—a senior shooter-sapper from the same military unit—saw a resident of Bucha on the street and, without any reason, fired a series of shots at her feet with automatic weapons. He laughed loudly, used obscene language, and mocked the frightened woman, humiliating her dignity.

None of the victims participated in hostilities, possessed weapons, or had any means that could justify the use of force against them. All of them were civilians.

The servicemen are charged with violations of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder and cruel treatment of the civilian population, committed by a group of individuals (Part 1, Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine.

Prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General continue to document the facts of war crimes committed by Russian occupiers, including in the territory of the Bucha community.
