Prosecutors of the Office of the Prosecutor General, together with investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine, have announced suspicions against five high-ranking military officials of the Russian Federation involved in the missile strike on Lviv in September 2024. Eight people were killed, and residential buildings, vehicles, and architectural monuments were damaged and destroyed.
Among the suspects are two major generals (including the commander of the long-range aviation of the aerospace forces of the Russian Armed Forces) and three colonels. They were the ones who directed the airstrikes on the civilian infrastructure of the city.
The investigation established that on September 4, 2024, at the direction of the suspects from the Russian Armed Forces, three strikes were carried out on the city.
A Kh-101 cruise missile struck on Brativ Mikhnovskykh Street, while two strikes with X-47M2 "Kinzhal" aeroballistic missiles hit the buildings of a local architectural monument on Konovaltsia Street and Zaliznychna Street.
As a result of the attack, eight people were killed. Twenty-five architectural monuments located within the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage site were damaged and destroyed, which are included in the World Heritage List that is under threat of destruction due to Russian aggression. Sixteen adjacent residential buildings and vehicles were also damaged.
The actions of the command staff of the long-range aviation of the Russian Federation have been qualified as violations of the laws and customs of war, as provided by international treaties, combined with intentional murder (Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The commanders face punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of eight to fifteen years or life imprisonment.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Main Investigative Department of the Security Service of Ukraine.
Currently, work is ongoing to identify all those involved in the commission of the crime: those who executed the criminal orders, as well as representatives of the political and military leadership of the Russian Federation.
