Two servicemen of the Soviet Union were convicted of abusing Ukrainian prisoners of war

Prosecutors proved that the commander of one of the units of the Russian Armed Forces, together with a subordinate, during the occupation of the village of Lukashivka in the Chernihiv region in March 2022, captured four defenders of Ukraine.

During the interrogation, the accused beat the defenders with their hands, feet, a bat, and other objects until they lost consciousness. All the men suffered numerous bodily injuries.

They also recorded frostbite of the extremities: the occupiers kept them outside without outer clothing and shoes.

Such treatment of prisoners of war is a gross violation of international humanitarian law.

Following the public prosecution by the prosecutors of the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, the court found two servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces guilty under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced the commander in absentia to life imprisonment, while the subordinate received 12 years of imprisonment.

The special pre-trial investigation was conducted by investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Chernihiv region.
