Prosecutors of the Zaporizhzhia Regional and Voznesenivskyi District Prosecutor's Offices have sent an indictment to the court regarding two participants of an organized group for fraud committed using computer technology, as well as for the illegal possession of explosive devices (part 4, 5 of Article 190, part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). As for two others, the materials of the pre-trial investigation have been separated into a separate proceeding due to their search and mobilization.
A resident of Zaporizhzhia developed a scheme to seize funds from foreigners under the guise of helping to recover lost cryptocurrency on trading cryptocurrency exchanges. To implement it, he rented several office spaces in Zaporizhzhia, equipped them with technology, and involved three accomplices.
The participants of the call center searched for citizens from EU countries via the Internet who had invested money in binary options exchanges to make a profit. The accused called them, posing as representatives of a European financial regulator, and offered to return their funds for a fee ranging from 1 to 5 thousand US dollars. They convinced the "clients" to set up an electronic wallet and transfer funds, which were then converted into cryptocurrency and transferred to controlled accounts.
The measures to uncover the scheme were carried out jointly with the Cybercrime Unit of the Main Criminal Police Department of the State Police of Latvia with the assistance of Europol and Eurojust.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the investigative department of Police No. 1 of the Zaporizhzhia RUP and the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Zaporizhzhia region, with operational support from the Strategic Investigations Department in the Zaporizhzhia region of the National Police of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a court verdict.
